The diameter of the opening can easily accommodate a standard Ethernet wire. It is a bit small for a thicker POE CAT6 wire. Since the magnets on these are pretty strong, the “shoe top” makes it much easier to pop open. Keep in mind - once you pop it open, your wire will just fall, so it is a two handed operation deal. You definitely can just pull on your wire and open it that way, but I would not recommend that; too much strain on the insulation. For those purposes you can get holders with weaker magnets. This holder Is pretty sturdy, so I would use it for the task that does not require constant opening/closing. Like holding a wire by the bedside table.
